Tier 1 Interventions for Sadness/Depression
TIER 1 INTERVENTIONS FOR SADNESS/DEPRESSION
Before you start, here are a few important points:
- Try multiple interventions
- Each intervention must be tried for at least 2 weeks
- Collect and track specific data on each intervention tried and the effect of each intervention over the time it was implemented
- After at least 6 weeks, you may consider moving to tier 2 interventions.
- You must submit your tier 1 data to and speak with an administrator before moving to tier 2.
Tier I Interventions for Sadness/Depression:
- Acknowledging positive behavior
- Assign a buddy or partner
- Assign a classroom job
- Break down assignment
- Call parent or positive note home
- Count to 10
- Deep breathing
- Draw a picture or write in a journal
- Encourage interaction with a more self confident student
- Engage student
- Explain assignment
- Explain directions
- Frequent home contact
- Helping students with homework
- Listen to music
- Praise student frequently
- Praise when good attitude and involvement occur
- Proximity to students
- Rewards and praise
- Send student on errand
- Speak with student in hallway
- Talk one on one with student
- Talk ticket
- Talk to parent
- Teach conflict resolution skills
- Teach coping skills
- Teach relationship skills
- Teach relaxation techniques
- Teach social skills
