Students will improve their knowledge and skill within music theory concepts including sight singing, stage presence, and vocal pedagogy. Students will also be encouraged to sing as a soloists as well as in small groups to enhance their overall confidence in their changing voices, perform many different styles of music, and they will experience the magic that music has to improve their confidence and academic achievement.

    4th-5th Choir

Fourth through fifth grade is designed to encourage excellency in vocal music through choral singing and introductions to music theory. This is an auditioned class that can be chosen as an elective course. This class will take the place of “Vista’s Vocal Xpressions” for the 4th and 5th grades, but it will be within the normal school day schedule. Throughout the year, students will explore performance etiquette, choral vocal technique, solo opportunities, music theory, movement in music, and many other related musical ideas. There will be performances and dress rehearsals that the students will be expected to attend. The performances will be joint with the 5th grade choir class.

    6th-9th Concert Choir/Advanced Choir

Concert choir is a non-auditioned group that requires students to have at least one full year of experience in another choir and selection from the director to participate in.

Advanced choir is an auditioned only group that will be performing in the community and representing Vista at festivals. It is our top traditional choir and students will be expected to put in after school hours for practice and performance preparation. Auditions will be held for current students in the spring of the previous year, and at the beginning of the new school year for students new to Vista. Students will learn sight singing, part singing, A Capella and accompanied music, and a large variety of music genres.

Vista School's choir program transforms voices into melodies, classrooms into stages, and students into harmonious storytellers of the heart.

Meet the Educators

Mrs. Smith
She received her teaching license at Weber State, and her master's from SUU. She was inspired to teach because of her desire to "connect with children again after I moved away from my kids and grandkids. . .and realizing how much fun I used to have when I did music with kids in years past." Her favorite quote is from Eckhart Tolle, "In today’s rush we all think too much, seek too much, want too much and forget about the joy of just Being.” Her favorite treat is Cinnabon and her favorite hobby is editing books. Her partner is an author who is working on a fantasy series, and she finds it relaxing to edit his books for him!

Mrs. Williams
Mrs. Williams has been playing music and writing songs since she was a little girl. She studied songwriting, piano and education at Brigham Young University and graduated with a degree in both music and history education. Mrs. Williams and her husband lived in Nashville, Tennessee for about ten years before moving to southern Utah. Mrs. Williams loves being part of Vista and watching students learn to play the piano, write music and explore the stories of their past through social studies. When she’s not teaching, Mrs. Williams likes to run on the trails around southern Utah, write and record music of her own, and take her three kids kayaking.
